Other Orthodontic Treatments/ Systems
Myo-functional Orthodontic Appliance
This treatment uses the jaws muscular forces to help move/ stabilise the teeth. It is similar to the Standard Removable Appliance but more complicated treatment planning and often less comfortable to wear.
Orthodontic Headgear
This clips into the Orthodontic Appliance (often into tubes that are fixed to the appliance) and then attaches to a band which goes around the back/ top of the head. It helps to shift numerous teeth at the same time for example when all a patients upper teeth are too far forward. As with pretty much all orthodontics, the more hours it is used for per day, the quicker the result.
Orthognathic Surgery
Surgery may be considered in some cases where big changes are wanted and/ or when bone needs to be moved with the teeth to achieve the desired result. This option can be considered when the result is simply not achievable with any other type of orthodontic treatment. It is rarely the first treatment option considered due to;
- It is expensive if not covered by NHS or insurance.
- Recovery time can be extensive as the jaw bones re-fuse in their new position.
- Possible scarring and bruising post-operation.
- Possibility of complications and discomfort after the operation.
